If your furnace filters are not changed on a regular basis, they will build up dirt and grime which will eventually impede air flow.  This will cause the heat exchanger to overheat which will, in turn, wear down the furnace limit switch.  If this happens, your furnace will not shut down when it is supposed to and overheat.
